From gravel barge to passenger vessel – the history of our party boats

Waterways and waterbodies have been important transport routes for goods ever since the middle ages and before. Prior to the introduction of railways during the 19th century, local transport of both industrial goods and passengers usually involved boats travelling Lake Zurich.

Locally known as ‘Ledischiffe’, in Central Switzerland sometimes also as ‘Nauen’, these types of vessels are still used to carry bulk freight (often grit or gravel) across lakes and along rivers. JMS-Gruppe has in recent years converted two such former cargo boats, both with a service record of well over a hundred years, into passenger vessels, now being operated as party boats for rental.
